Memories of racism – Velma Richards

VelmaVelma Richards came to St Albans in 1964. Her family came from St Kitts in the Caribbean and her great granddad fought in World War II. Her daughter, Jasmine, was shocked when she found out how black people were treated when they first came over here and that Velma herself was a victim of racist insults in the 1960s.

    Velma I can’t hear your interview very well; I wonder whether your maiden name was Rogers and you went to the Abbey Primary School? If you did, I remember you! -x-
