Cottonmill area – Margaret Brown

Margaret Brown was a child when she lived in Boleyn Drive on the Mentmore estate (built 1938-9) and knew the area well. She talks about how the shape of Cottonmill Lane changed after the war when Berners Drive and Priory Walk were being constructed. The new shape of the road was built from the rubble from the bombing of London. She describes the field behind her house – where Monks Close is now – as the buttercup field. She remembers the farmer from Sopwell Mill Farm delivering milk. She talks about bathing in the river Ver by New Barnes Mill and describes which bit of the river was called the Tar.
