World War II searchlight – Gloria Morris

Gloria MasonThere was a gun emplacement with a searchlight in Sopwell. It was situated in the fields before the estate was built approximately where Nuns Lane meets Cottonmill Lane. Gloria Morris remembers her mother pointing it out to her when they were living in Bardwell Road. She can remember seeing the orange glow in the sky from the burning of London during the blitz and hearing the drone of the doodlebugs. She heard from a member of the Home Guard about one German plane which crashed in Fleetville. Years later her mother used the concrete base of the searchlight to build a dry stone wall.
