From Durham via Changi Jail to Sopwell – Rob Edwards

Rob croppedRob Edwards’ father, Bill, came from Durham. Rather than going down the coal mines, he joined the army. His troop ship was diverted to Singapore and he was captured by the Japanese and taken to Changi jail where he remained for the rest of the duration of the war. Rob recounts the tale of his family spotting him on a newsreel in the cinema in Durham – they had assumed he was dead. He had lost his leg so was sent to Canada for rehabilitation and then was sent down south where he met Rob’s mother. They finally settled in St Albans where became a postman.
