When Lil Day first came to St Albans with her husband after the war, she lived with her mother-in-law in Park Street. The river Ver was at the bottom of the garden. Lil describes a family boat trip, complete with picnic and wind-up gramophone, from Park Street all the way to the fields at Cottonmill. She also remembers the district nurse, Nurse Mason, who used to bath frequently in the river wearing an old fashioned red and white striped bathing costume.
Interview date: 29 July 2010. Interviewer: Sandy Norman. Also present was Pauline Crosier, Lil Day’s daughter.
